Homemade soap was something a lot more people discovered how to do when the COVID-19 pandemic first started. Since then, there’s been more and more interest shown on how to make soap at home.
What You Need To Make Soap At Home
How to make soap at home involves some key ingredients and equipment. It will take about 1 hour to make it and a full day to cool down your creation into a bar of hard, homemade soap. The equipment you will need are silicon soap molds, silicone baking pans, a stainless steel thermometer, and a stick blender. Here is the ingredients list.
- 2/3 cup of unrefined coconut oil.
- 2/3 cup of olive oil.
- 2/3 cup of almond oil. You may also use grapeseed, sunflower, or safflower oil.
- 1/4 cup of lye, aka 100% sodium hydroxide. This can be found at any hardware store.
- 3/4 cup of water. Ideally, you want distilled or purified water.
Combine Lye And Water
The first step is to put your gloves and any other PPE on. Put your water into a quart canning jar. Slowly add lye into the water while stirring.
This will create fumes so be sure to stand back and allow these to rise and dissipate. Wait until the water starts to clear before you move on.
Add Your Oils To A Separate Jar
Take your coconut oil, olive oil, and almond oil, and add them together in a separate jar. Place the jars in a pan of water to heat. The internal temperature of the oil should be 120 degrees.
Similarly, at that time, your lye-and-water mix should have cooled to about the same. For homemade soap, you want both jars to come down to between 95 degrees and 105 degrees before mixing.
Mix Together In A Mixing Bowl
Once you’ve got everything at the right temperature, pour the oils into a mixing bowl and very slowly add the lye while stirring. Once it’s all mixed, continue stirring for approx. 5 minutes.
For homemade soap to come together, you want as much of the lye as possible to make contact with the oils. After five minutes, continue stirring or use an immersion blender at that time. The mixture will lighten in color and thicken into a pudding-like substance.
Pour Your Mix Into Molds
The last step is to pour your mixture into silicone molds. Cover it with plastic wrap. Wrap it in a towel. This will help keep the heat in and cause the mixture to start turn into what looks like soap. This process, however, takes hours.
Keep your mixture covered and wrapped for 24 hours. Check on it afterward. If the mixture is still warm or soft, it may need another 12-24 hours. The finished product, once done, will be cold and firm. It will be soap! Keep any homemade soap inside an airtight container as inside there’s glycerin which will pull moisture from the air and make it soft.
