Moxibustion (Chinese: 灸) is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy using moxa made from dried mugwort (Artemisia argyi).
There are several different types of moxa and a lot of moxibustion accessories available at Lierremedical.com. We choose the best aged moxa for professional therapists to shop. What is the reason behind our choices? Why aged moxa is better than new moxa?
Usually, the moxa that saved for over one year is called aged moxa. Among all the aged moxa, three year and five year moxa perform best during moxibustion. In an ancient Chinese book named <Meng Zi>, there is an old saying that “Three year old moxa could cure seven year oil illness.” It clearly states that ancient Chinese people already had a lot of experiences related to moxa. Back to our question, why aged moxa is better?
- Burned aged moxa is warm but not scalding. It’s very mild. At the same time, the power of moxa would pass through skin into deep places and would be effective for a period.
- Burned new moxa is stronger. At the same time, the stronger power tends to stay at the surface layer. Therefore, it will bring a burning sensation during moxibustion.
- Aged moxa is stored for a long time period, majority of mugwort oil will volatilize into air. The odor of aged moxa is mild and pure. The color of aged moxa is light yellow. New moxa has higher level of mugwort oil inside. It has a strong pungent odor. The color of new moxa is more greenish.
- Since aged moxa has less mugwort oil, it will burn slower than new moxa. In addition, it will create less smoke.
From the above, we can conclude that aged loose moxa contains less mugwort oil, burns slowly and mild, create less smoke with stronger penetration. Apart from that, the burning ash won’t fall easily onto skin to cause burning.
New moxa does not have all these advantages. It has a strong pungent odor, contains a lot of volatile oils, burns
quick and creates a lot of smoke with strong burning effect. Because the burning ash will fall on skin easily, it will cause problems to skin and muscles.
That’s the reason why Lierre choose to provide aged moxa to professional therapists. Our super pure A grade moxa is soft and pure with golden color. These characters represent that it is high-quality aged moxa.
