Use a cream or oil

A gua sha tool isn’t run along dry skin. The best effect is obtained by using a cream or oil to lubricate the skin. This allows the tool to slide effortlessly. Pick out a light oil or cream with a pleasant scent to enhance further the gua sha experience, which is both relaxing and therapeutic. Gua sha can definitely help to aborb ingredients in oil, cream, or lotion.

If you’re using gua sha on facial, it is better to choose organic beauty oil like Divine essence organic rosehip oil or sukin rosehip oil. Because rosehip oil is well known for it’s richness of essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which works well in regeneration of tissue and cell.

Choose right angle of gua sha tool

The angle at which the gua sha tool is held is critical to apply the right pressure properly. Too little won’t cause the mild bruising that is needed. Too much can cause excessive bruising and can be painful. Hold the tool between 15 and 30 degrees to get the best grip and leverage for gua sha.

  1. Use gua sha tool on chest: Star in the midline of the chest. Then, with light pressure, drag the gua sha tool towards the armpit. This drains the lymph system, promoting vitality. Always move horizontally across the chest, never vertically. Start from the lower chest and move up, making three to seven passes on each side.
  • Use gua sha tool on the neck: The neck is very delicate, and as such, a light touch is needed during gua sha. Move gently up the neck to the jawline. After each stroke, gently wiggle the gua sha tool to remove lymph more efficiently. Start at the outside and move inwards toward the midline of the neck.

Three to seven passes are required for the jaw and maintaining the slight wiggle at the end of each stroke. It is essential not to go back and forth, lift the tool, and return to the centerline each stroke.
  • Use gua sha tool around eyes or around mouth: The small side of the gua sha tool (Heart shape gua sha or S shape gua sha) is useful for working in delicate areas. Very carefully, use this end around the eyes, nose, and mouth. Start at the center and move towards the outside of the face. Be careful not to apply excess pressure and pull the skin around the eyes too roughly.
  • Back of the neck. Start at the base of the neck and take slow strokes from the midline out to the edge. Move upwards slightly with each stroke, moving up to the scalp. This is an extra bit to add to the rest of the routine. It’s highly relaxing.
